THE OBJECTIVE
To get out of a maze. It's just that simple. Ok, maybe it's a little
more complicated. The object is more precisely to get out of a maze in
the least moves possible while avoiding being confused by other players
who erase your marks or leave false trails and attempting to confuse
other players.
THE SCREEN
The screen is made up of three main areas. The info box at the top, which
gives you information on the current maze. The view window in the center,
which contains the portion of the maze you can see. And the instruction box
at the bottom, which lists the keys used in the game. Also on the screen is
the following information:
Current Row x Col: Where you are within the maze.
Destination RxC : Where you are trying to get to.
Total Moves : The total number of moves you have
made since you first entered the
current maze.
Total Marks : The total number of marks you have
drawn since entering the maze.
Remaining Moves : Number of moves you have left for this
session. (SysOp Configurable)
Remaining Marks : Number of marks you have left for this
session. (SysOp Configurable)
Time Left : The number of minutes remaining for
this session. (SysOp Configurable)
PLAYING THE GAME
Playing the game is easy. First, you will asked to choose what color chalk
you wish to carry. This chalk will be used to draw marks within the maze in
order to mark dead ends, keep track of where you've been, and/or to confuse
other players. Then, you will be given a list of the available mazes. This
list contains the name of the maze, the dimensions, and the number of Exits
(NOTE: As a rule of thumb, the more Exits the harder the maze).
After choosing a maze to enter (and waiting for it to be loaded), simply use
the arrow keys (either set, Num-Lock doesn't matter!) to move around within
the maze until you reach the appropriate destination Row x Col. At any
time, you can draw a mark on the maze floor by hitting D. Any single
position in the maze can hold up to 2 marks.
While strolling around the maze, you may also encounter markers left by
other players. However, if you happen to come across a mark the same color
as your marks, don't immediately assume it was left be you. Since there
are only five colors to choose from, it is very likely that you will run
across markers the same color as yours which were left by ANOTHER player.
If you do come across a mark, be it yours or someone else's, you can erase
it by hitting E. If there are two markers in the same position, the one
on the left will be erased first then the one on the right. When drawing
marks, keep in mind that there is only a limited number you can draw in
any one visit to the maze. This limit is set by your SysOp.
At any time, if you get tired of the maze you are in, you can "Give Up"
by hitting G. Doing this will take you back to the maze list and allow
you to choose another maze to enter. Keep in mind though that your
moves, time, and marks remaining will NOT be reset by doing this. These
only get reset when you exit the game.
EXITING THE GAME
There are four ways to exit the game. First, if find your way to the
destination and then answer "No" to entering another maze, the game will
end. Second, at any time, you can hit Q to Quit from the main screen.
If you choose this method, the name of the maze you are in, your current
position, your total number of moves, and your total marks are all saved
so that next time you play you will start exactly where you left off.
Third, if you choose (Q)uit from the maze list, you will be exited back
to the BBS. Lastly, if an error occurs in the program, heaven forbid,
the program will immediately abort in order to prevent a system lock up.
If this does happen, you need not be concerned with the error message
which will appear on your screen. This message is simply there to let
you know what happened. The error number, along with other vital
information, will be written to a file just before the program aborts.
Therefore, it is not necessary to leave a message to the sysop detailing
where the error occurred or what the error number was.
STRATEGY
This one is kinda tricky. Actually, there isn't one! How to go about
solving any maze depends heavily (if not completely) on who created the
maze. The five mazes currently available were all created by the same
person, namely me. However, the logic involved in creating each maze
was vastly different. Therefore, a technique that works in one maze,
for instance "always choose the middle opening", may not work with
another maze. Also, there will be places where you have go left at a
four way intersection in order to get to an exit on the RIGHT side of
the maze. In other words, don't always count on things being straight
forward and "easy."
PRIZE MAZES
If you Sysop chooses to do so, he can set up a maze to be a "Prize
Maze". This means that some prizes will be given out to the person(s)
who complete the maze in the least moves possible using the least marks.
Prize Mazes will have "<== Prize Maze" in bright red beside them in the
maze list.
When you enter a Prize Maze, or return to one, you will be shown the
list of prizes available. It's completely up to your SysOp how long
a contest will run.
Well, that's about it for the instructions. Now, off you go to the game.
